officially launched the Mallorca Championships

11th October 2019

To be played from june 20 to 27 in mallorca will feature evening matches on grass, to become also a social event

Santa Ponça will become the site of a men’s tournament from 2020 on, offering important points for the ATP ranking and 900.000€ in prize money. The ATP event is coming back to Mallorca 17 years after the last edition of the tournament.

This is the first ever ATP event to be held on grass in Spain, traditionally known as a clay court country. But things change and the Mallorca Championships is the new tennis product of Spain.

The first player to be announced and confirmed is Spanish star Feliciano Lopez “I am very excited to be here today in Mallorca announcing that I will play this tournament. It is like a dream to play on grass and to play it at home” said current Queen’s singles and doubles (with Andy Murray) champion. “ I am sure a lot of players will come and play here since the conditions are perfect to play on grass”

Edwin Weindorfer, CEO of e|Motion group, promoter of the event announced the total prize money of the event, the third biggest on the ATP250 category: “We have a 900,000 euro prize money in place and we expect to increase it in the next year to a 1,000,000 euro mark level which is something big. We will continually develop the tournament in Mallorca in the coming years and Santa Ponça is the perfect setting for that. I want to thank Wimbledon for their great support of our tennis commitment in Mallorca”,

Toni Nadal will be the Tournament Director: “I am sure the players will chose Mallorca to play that week. The price money is good, the conditions are perfect, Mallorca is always attractive being a great destination and we are ready to have a very professional event. Now we need the support from the crowds that hopefully will respond positively to this event.”

The 29th of April of 2002 was an important day for tennis. On that day a 15 year old kid named Rafa Nadal won his first ATP match and it was in Calviá, Mallorca. Will we have the chance to see another new Nadal ?
