The Mallorca Championships creates the #MCTeen to boost the young Balearic tennis
03rd February 2020
The new ATP 250 tournament that will be hosted on the grass of Santa Ponça from June 20 to 27 and that will bring together the best tennis players in the world has established an alliance with the Tennis Federation of the Balearic Islands with the aim of contributing to the development of base tennis of the islands.
The ATP Mallorca Championships tournament and the Tennis Federation of the Balearic Islands have announced the creation of a U15 circuit called Mallorca Championships Teen whose climax will be the achievement of a final phase during the week of the ATP tournament. “We wanted to create a 360º circuit,” explains Toni Nadal, director of the professional tournament. And he continues: “The idea is that there are previous qualifying tournaments on all surfaces and that the final phase is hosted on the grass courts where professional tennis players will play. In this way, the champions of the circuit will be the most complete players. Two of the three numbers 1 of the world that Spain has had have been Majorcans [by Rafa Nadal and Carlos Moyà] and we want to contribute so that this island remains a tennis power not only nationally, but also worldwide “.
“This year, being the first, we will start with two previous qualifying tournaments, one on fast courts and another on clay”, explains Toni Nadal. “The idea is that the circuit will grow in the next editions, also celebrating qualifiers in the rest of the Balearic Islands.” Therefore, and in the absence of implementing qualifying championships in all the islands, the federation will be involved in financially helping those players from Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera who want to travel to Mallorca to play the tournaments. “For us it is great that an event as important as the Mallorca Championships wants to get involved in this way in the promotion of the base tennis of the islands,” says Antoni Ferragut, president of the Balearic federation. “Therefore, we are going to put everything on our side so that all the children who want to play these tournaments can do so, regardless of whether they live on one island or another,” says Ferragut.
The first qualifying tournament will take place at the Es Center de Manacor Tennis Club (next to the Rafa Nadal Academy) on February 29 and March 1, 7 and 8. The second qualifying tournament will be held during the Easter holidays (from April 16 to 19) at the Marratxí Open Tenis y Padel. The champions of each tournament will qualify directly for the final phase of June, in addition to the four players with the best score in the qualifiers. A total of 8 players (four male and four female) will play this last phase from June 20 to 27 and will decide the champions of the first edition of #MCTeen.
The Mallorca Championships, a tournament belonging to the Road to Wimbledon, will be the first ATP event hosted on grass in Spain, as well as the first one on this surface having evening sessions under artificial light, which will allow the organization to generate an atmosphere and a social experience for attendees unique in the circuit. In addition, important names such as Fernando Verdasco or Feliciano López have already confirmed their participation in this first edition of the tournament and it is hoped that the organization can confirm more tennis players in the near future.
