Shelton starts strong at the Mallorca Championships presented by waterdrop®
The fourth day of the Mallorca Championships presented by waterdrop® awaited Ben Shelton's debut in the singles draw on Wednesday. The top seed made no mistake and qualified for the quarter-finals alongside Jakub Mensik, Alejandro Tabilo and Paul Jubb.
The American overcame Australian Rinky Hijikata in straight sets (6/4, 6/0) and will face British player Jubb in the last but one round, who defeated another opponent who came from the qualifying round, Australian Adam Walton (6/0, 6/3).
Czech Mensik made a comeback in the longest match of the day, two hours and 40 minutes, to beat Italian Fabio Fognini (4/6, 6/3, 7/5). The 18-year-old will now face Tabilo. The Chilean beat Kazakhstan's Alexander Shevchenko (6/3, 6/2) in the opening match of the day.
Doubles
The top seeds in the doubles draw, Americans Nathaniel Lammons and Jackson Withrow, came through (7/6 [2], 6/4 to Bhambri/Olivetti) and Ecuador's Diego Hidalgo and Chile's Tabilo also qualified for the semi-finals (6/3, 6/4 to Doumbia/Reboul), Germans Constantin Frantzen and Hendrik Jebens (4/6, 6/3, 11-9 to Brown/Masur), as well as Briton Julian Cash and American Robert Galloway (6/1, 6/2 to Martinez/Munar).
