Monfils meets Bautista in the quarterfinals
The Mallorca Championships presented by waterdrop® has reached its halfway point on Tuesday after the first two quarter-final ties were decided. Roberto Bautista will face Gael Monfils, while Alex Michelsen will take on Sebastian Ofner.
The Spaniard, finalist of the 2022 edition of the only ATP 250 on grass in southern Europe, had to come back against Frenchman Ugo Humbert, the second seed, after a two and a half hour battle (3/6, 6/3, 6/4).
Meanwhile, the Frenchman Monfils showed that he has adapted well to the grass courts of the Mallorca Country Club with his second win in the tournament against the Spaniard Roberto Carballés (6/3, 6/4).
The Austrian Ofner got rid of the fifth-seeded Italian Luciano Darderi in two sets (6/3, 7/5) and will be looking for the semi-finals against the American Michelsen, who also knocked out a favourite, third seed and runner-up in the last edition, Adrian Mannarino (7/6 [5], 6/4).
Precisely the 19-year-old tennis player saw his record of precocity, as the youngest winner of a match at the tournament held in Calvià, broken by Jakub Mensik (18). The Czech player pulled off the upset of the day by beating defending champion Christopher Eubanks (6/3, 3/6, 6/1).
Qualy players vindicate themselves
Adam Walton and Paul Jubb, both from the qualifiers, beat Germans Yannick Hanfmann (7/5, 6/2) and Maximilian Marterer (6/1, 6/2) respectively. The Aussie and the Briton will battle it out for a place in the quarter-finals.
