Mallorca Championships presented by waterdrop® pays a tribute to Thiem
Monday was a very special day at the Mallorca Championships presented by waterdrop® because of the emotive tribute paid to Dominic Thiem.
The Austrian tennis player is retiring this season at the age of 30 and, after putting an end to his participation in the only ATP 250 that is played on grass in southern Europe, the centre court of the Mallorca Country Club honoured his career.
After the match against Gael Monfils, Thiem received a gift from Edwin Weindorfer, CEO and founder of e|motion, as well as Toni Nadal, the tournament director. The French tennis player also did not want to miss the event with a dedicated audience that was very affectionate with the Viennese.
Weindorfer dedicated some words to the Grand Slam champion, in what could have been his last match in Spain. "Thanks to an amazing athlete, US Open winner and an incredible player. We hope to see you more often in Mallorca".
Thiem replied that he is "in love with Mallorca", and that he is sure to return "soon to play at Mallorca Country Club where he always enjoys playing".
