Medvedev reigns supreme at Mallorca Championships
The first names on the winners’ list of the Mallorca Championships are Daniil Medvedev as singles champions and Simone Bolelli and Maximo Gonzalez as doubles winners. Youngsters Isabel Skoog and Bryan Hernandez had their names immortalized as the winners of the MCTeen Finals U16.
Top-seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev dispatched his American challenger Sam Querrey easily 6-4, 6-2 in just 62 minutes. It was his eleventh tour title and his first on grass, thereby tightening his grip on the world’s number 2 spot in the ATP rankings.
Medvedev only dropped one set during the whole tournament. This happened against Spaniard Pablo Carreno in the semi finals (3-6, 6-3, 6-2). The other two matches against Frenchman Corentin Moutet (6-4, 6-2) and Norwegian Casper Ruud (7-5, 6-1) were clear-cut affairs for the Russian.
After the final he told the fans: “I think the level I played in the final was the best of the whole week. Coming to Mallorca was a great decision, because the weather is good, the courts are in a very good condition and the tournament is simply amazing. I think there is a good chance that I will come back to repeat this experience in the future.”
