Tabilo goes for the double crown in Mallorca
Alejandro Tabilo became on Friday the first tennis player to reach the singles and doubles finals in the same edition of the Mallorca Championships presented by waterdrop®.
The Chilean needed one hour and 54 minutes to overcome Gaël Monfils (2/6, 6/2 and 7/6[3]) and reach his third final of the year, after Auckland (hard court) and Santiago (clay court).
"At the end of the first set I started to feel the ball better, I tried to hit it and more balls started to come in and I felt that in the second set I would have options because, in the first, almost no first serve came in. That's when everything changed when my serve started to come in," he said.
In addition, the 27-year-old tennis player equals Jaime Fillol as the only tennis player in his country to achieve the record of reaching finals in cement, clay and grass.
"I think it's incredible and I didn't expect it this year when it started. I hope I can continue like this. It's very exciting to be next to those names, so it motivates me to keep working and continue with this rhythm," he confessed.
Tabilo will face the winner of the semi-final between Paul Jubb and Sebastian Ofner this Saturday, not before 15:00, in a day in which he will opt to take the double in the only ATP 250 that is played on grass in southern Europe.
Half an hour after the singles award ceremony, the ATP No.24 will take on Julian Cash and Robert Galloway, along with fellow Ecuadorian Diego Hidalgo. The British-American duo defeated Germans Constantin Frantzen and Hendrik Jebens (6/7[3], 6/3, 10-8) on Friday.
"Tomorrow we have to come with everything, the semifinal with 'Dieguito' [Hidalgo] was very tough with two tie-breaks. Tomorrow we're going to go all out and try to win both titles, which would be unforgettable," he ended.
