The Mallorca Championships presented by waterdrop® semi-finalists are already revealed
Thursday was an intense day at the Mallorca Championships presented by waterdrop® with the quarter finals that left Gaël Monfils, Alejandro Tabilo, Sebastian Ofner and Paul Jubb as the final contenders for the title.
Britain's Jubb pulled off a shock by qualifying from the qualifying round to the semi-finals, knocking out top seed Ben Shelton of the USA by saving a match point in a third-set tiebreak (6/3, 3/6, 7/6[8]).
The revelation of the tournament will face Sebastian Ofner this Friday (18:00). The Austrian also overcame an adverse score against American Alex Michelsen (3/6, 7/5 and 6/3) after almost two hours of play on centre court at the Mallorca Country Club.
The other semi-final will be played by Monfils and Tabilo (15:30). The Frenchman won the longest match of the day, lasting two and a half hours, against Spaniard Roberto Bautista (6/3, 4/6, 6/4). For his part, the Chilean gave no options to the Czech Jakub Mensik (6/4, 6/4).
The 24th-ranked player made history by becoming the first player from his country to reach the semi-finals of an ATP grass-court tournament since 1977 when Jaime Fillol did it in Nottingham.
First finalist couple
Tabilo showed he is very comfortable at the only ATP 250 on grass in southern Europe by qualifying for the doubles final alongside Ecuador's Daniel Hidalgo.
The South American pair upset the top seeded American duo of Nathaniel Lammons and Jackson Withrow (7/6[3], 7/6[5]).
Tabilo and Hidalgo will meet their opponents this Friday in the final of the clash between British Julian Cash and American Robert Galloway against Germans Constantin Frantzen and Hendrik Jebens (13:00).
