Stefanos Tsitsipas confirms participation at the Mallorca Championships

World No.6 will compete in singles and doubles draw

Two days before the start of the tournament, the Mallorca Championships’ line- up has received a high-class upgrade. The world’s number 6, Stefanos Tsitsipas from Greece, has received a Wildcard for the main draw of the grass court tournament (951,745 € total financial commitment) on the Spanish island. In combination with the world’s number 1, Daniil Medvedev, two superstars from the current top 10 will compete in this tennis highlight in the Mallorca Country Club next week.

Altogether, fans will be treated to six top 20 players, as last year’s Wimbledon semifinalists Hubert Hurkacz (POL/ATP 12) and Denis Shapovalov (CAN/ATP 15), as well as local heroes Pablo Carreno Busta (ATP 19) and Roberto Bautista Agut (ATP 20) have also committed to the Mallorca Championships. Australian fan favorite Nick Kyrgios will also grace the line-up, as will veteran Feliciano Lopez, who has received a wildcard for the main draw.

Stefanos Tsitsipas is the winner of eight ATP tournaments (amongst them the ATP Finals 2019 in London and the Masters 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo in 2021 and 2022) and has already set several records in his young career. By reaching the French Open finals in 2021, he was the first Greek to ever reach a Grand Slam final. Furthermore, with only 22 years of age in Roland Garros 2021, he was also the youngest player to reach the final of one of the four Grand Slam tournaments since Andy Murray 2010 at the Australian Open in Melbourne.

This season, Tsitsipas has set his sights on playing well on grass, as he emphasized last week during a media call in Stuttgart: “I’ve always had grass court tennis in my head. I love this surface, no matter what my results say. It’s a pity that I wasn’t able to show what I am able to do on grass. I want to change that this year and I’m investing lots into this goal”, says Tsitsipas, who will also compete in Mallorca’s doubles competition, together with his brother Petros.

“The participation of Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Mallorca Championships is obviously yet another boost for our tournament. We have a great line-up this year, which is head-lined by Daniil Medvedev, the current number one in the world. Grass court tennis on the highest level and an exciting tournament are guaranteed”, says tournament director Toni Nadal.
