Bautista moves to last 16 and Feliciano falls
Ivashka, Bonzi and Bellier also qualifies to second round
Monday saw the first Spanish triumph in the main draw of Mallorca Championships. Roberto Bautista advanced to the round of 16, while Feliciano Lopez lost in his opening match against Tallon Griekspoor.
The fifth seed needed one hour and fifty minutes to defeat Taro Daniel (6-4, 7-6[4]). The Japanese player, who came from the qualifying round, was a tough opponent for the player from Castellón. Bautista used a break in the fifth game to take the first set. He got to serve for the match in the tenth game of the second set, but the world No.123 forced the sudden death and even squandered a 2-4 lead, then conceded a 5-0 setback.
Lopez was less fortunate in his match against Griekspoor. The Dutchman took two tie-breaks to defeat the player from Toledo in one hour and 46 minutes (7-6[3], 7-6[3]). The service of both players prevailed, as there were no breaks in the whole match, with twelve direct services connected by the ATP No.53 and another fifteen by his rival.
The rest of the matches of the day were won by Ilya Ivashka against Finnish Emil Ruusuvuori (6-4, 6-1), Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi against Chilean Alejandro Tabilo due to physical problems (6-3, 4-2 ret.) and Swiss qualifier Antoine Bellier against Argentine Federico Delbonis (6-3, 7-6[6]).
Doubles
In the doubles draw, Austrians Alexander Erler and Lucas Miedler were the first of the day to qualify for the quarterfinals, after beating the pair formed by Argentine Sebastian Baez and Portuguese Joao Sousa (7-5, 3-6, 10-4). On the other hand, Aslan Karatsev and Belgian Joran Vliegen did the same against Kazakhstan's Andrey Golubev and Argentinean Maximo Gonzalez, defending champion of the tournament, in two tiebreaks (7-6[1], 7-6[6]).
