Medvedev and Tsitsipas are Wednesday main stars
Shapovalov and Carreño also make their Main Draw debut
The Mallorca Championships reaches its halfway point with a luxury line-up for Wednesday. Singles draw top four seeds, Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Denis Shapovalov and Pablo Carreño; will make their debut in the round of 16 after raising a lot of expectation since their arrival in Santa Ponça (Calvià).
World No. 1 will begin his title defense at the Mallorca Country Club at 4:00 pm against Aslan Karatsev on Centre Court. Medvedev, recent finalist at 's-Hertogenbosch and Halle tournaments, will try to extend his good form on grass against the No.43 in the ranking. Karatsev comes into the clash after managing to come from behind in the previous round against Jaume Munar (3-6, 6-1, 6-3).
The ATP No. 4 will also take to the main court, in his case in the second round, to face Ilya Ivashka. Tsitsipas, who starts as the second seed, arrives at the only ATP tournament played on grass in Southern Europe. This year's Monte Carlo Masters 1000 champion is looking to improve on the quarter-finals in Stuttgart and the round of 16 in Halle against an opponent who defeated Emil Ruusuvuori in the first round (6-4, 6-1).
Shapovalov will make his Grandstand debut against Benjamin Bonzo. The Canadian, third seed, semifinalist in the last edition of Wimbledon, will play for the first time the Mallorca Championships trying to arrive in the best shape to defend his result in the third Grand Slam of the calendar. For his part, the Frenchman started the tournament with a victory against Alejandro Tabilo who withdrew due to injury (6-3, 4-2 ret.).
The day's action on Centre Court will begin at 1:00 pm with the appearance of Pablo Carreño. The Spaniard, seeded fourth, will face Antoine Bellier in his second appearance on the island. The semifinalist at the Mallorca Country Club last year will face an opponent who comes from the qualifying round and has three wins in the tournament. The last one, already in the main draw, was against Argentine Federico Delbonis (6-3, 7-6[6]).
