Kyrgios survives hitting 24 aces
Giron, Altmaier and Báez also advanced to second round
Nick Kyrgios survived his debut at the Mallorca Championships on a Tuesday day in which the Spanish representatives, Pablo Carreño with Jaume Munar and David Vega with Brazilian Rafael Matos, advanced to the quarterfinals of the doubles draw.
The Australian needed two hours and a quarter to turn the score against Laslo Djere (5-7, 7-6[1], 7-6[1]). The Serb managed to take the first set and Kyrgios needed two sudden-deaths and 24 straight sets to advance to the round of 16. On Wednesday, the world No. 45 will meet fifth-seeded Roberto Bautista for a place in the antepenultimate round.
Marcos Giron staged the other comeback of the day. The American knocked out Botic van de Zandschulp after a three-set marathon of two hours and 39 minutes (6-7[6], 6-4, 7-6[2]). The ATP No. 67 will now face his compatriot Mackenzie McDonald.
The day was completed with victories for Sebastian Baez and Daniel Altmaier, who will now meet in the next round. The Argentine, seeded eighth, defeated Australian Jordan Thompson (6-3, 6-4). On the other hand, the German did the same against Serbian Dusan Lajovic (7-5, 7-6[2]).
Doubles
In the doubles draw, the local duos formed by Carreño and Munar defeated Mexican Santiago González and Argentinean Andrés Molteni, third seeds, in two tiebreaks (7-6[4], 7-6[5]). Fellow Spaniard Vega advanced to the quarterfinals along with Matos after disposing of Dutchmen Tallon Griekspoor and Botic van de Zandschulp (6-3, 7-6[4]).
The first pre-qualified pair, formed by the Salvadoran Marcelo Arevalo and the Dutch Jean-Julien Rojer, fulfilled the predictions against the Greek brothers Petros and Stefanos Tsitsipas (6-3, 6-4). Finally, Uruguay's Ariel Behar and Ecuador's Gonzalo Escobar defeated France's Fabrice Martin and Hugo Nys (6-7[3], 6-4, 10-8).
