Kyrgios withdraws from Mallorca Championships due to injury

The Australian forced to withdraw suffering pain in the rectus abdominis on the left side

Nick Kyrgios withdraws from the Mallorca Championships. The Australian tennis player has been forced to withdraw after suffering from pain in the rectus abdominis on the left side and will not take the court, in the last turn of the day today, against Roberto Bautista in the round of 16.

The long match played yesterday against Serbian Laslo Djere, which he won after two hours and fifteen minutes (5-7, 7-6[1], 7-6[1]), together with his good performance at the ATP Stuttgart reaching the semifinals, have taken their toll on the world No. 45, who will now try to recover in time for the upcoming Wimbledon.

Kyrgios has raised great expectation since his arrival at the Mallorca Country Club, mobilizing a multitude of fans as one of the great attractions in a luxury line-up for the only ATP event on grass that takes place in the south of Europe. His match against Djere generated so far the best entry of public in the Centre Court, who could enjoy a thrilling battle.

Nick Kyrgios: I’m really sorry I’m going to have to withdraw from tonight's match here in Mallorca. I have been playing a lot of great matches lately and unfortunately I woke up with a pain in my abs. I went to see the tournament doctor right away and he advised that I don't play tonight. I really value the Mallorca Championships but I will follow his advice as I don't want to risk Wimbledon next week.

I was really looking forward to tonight's match as I’ve been loving my time here. Mallorca is such a beautiful island with really nice people.

I want to say a big thank you to Toni Nadal, Edwin Weindorfer, the amazing crowd and the whole tournament organization for the great treatment. I hope I can come back to Mallorca next year.

Toni Nadal (Mallorca Championships Director): We have been delighted to have Nick Kyrgios here at the Mallorca Championships this week. He has shown that, when he wants to, he is a great player. I wish him a speedy recovery and all the best for the rest of the season.

Edwin Weindorfer (e|motion Group CEO and founder): We are very sorry for Nick Kyrgios injury. We were very happy to have him at our event in Stuttgart and this one in Mallorca. We wish him the very best for the season and particularly for Wimbledon. We wish and hope to see him next year both in Stuttgart and Mallorca.

Javier Cerrato (Mallorca Championships Doctor): Nick Kyrgios suffers pain in the rectus abdominis on the left side due to the accumulation of matches in recent weeks and the effort of yesterday's first round match. This will not allow him to return to the court tonight against Roberto Bautista.
