Medvedev and Tsitsipas start strong

Shapovalov and Carreño upset in their debuts

Both Mallorca Championships main seeds fulfilled the predictions in their respective openers. Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas were the face of a day in which Denis Shapovalov (3) and Pablo Carreño (4) fell by the wayside.

The defending champion returned to Mallorca Country Club with a victory over Aslan Karatsev. The world No. 1 made a comeback (4-6, 6-3, 6-3) to raise his tournament record to 5-0 and now he will meet Roberto Bautista, who advanced to the quarterfinals after Nick Kyrgios withdrew, in the last eight. Medvedev and the fifth seed will rematch last week's duel in Halle, which ended in victory for the top seed (6-2, 6-4).

On the other hand, Tsitsipas sealed his ticket to the antepenultimate round after defeating Ilya Ivashka (6-4, 6-4). The 37th win this season for the second seed, the tour leader in number of victories, was resolved in an hour and 23 minutes of play and he will now face Marcos Giron. The American was forced to come from behind against his compatriot Mackenzie McDonald in two hours and 17 minutes (4-6, 7-6[5], 6-4).

Benjamin Bonzi and Antoine Bellier were the day's surprises, knocking out the third and fourth seeds respectively. The Frenchman got rid of Denis Shapovalov on the Grand Stand court (6-4, 6-1) and the Swiss, who will play for the first time in his career in the ATP quarterfinals, did the same against the Spaniard Pablo Carreño (6-3, 6-4).

On Thursday, Bonzi will fight for a place in the semifinals against the German Denis Altmaier, who defeated the Argentinean Sebastian Baez (6-2, 2-6, 6-4); as well as Bellier against the Dutch Tallon Grieskspoor, who defeated the Slovakian Alex Molcan (0-6, 6-3, 7-6[3]).

Doubles

The doubles draw has already defined its first semifinal. Australian Matthew Ebden and Austrian Philipp Oswald saved four match points in the third set super tie-break against the Spanish duo of Pablo Carreño and Jaume Munar (6-3, 2-6, 18-16). On the other hand, Uruguay's Ariel Behar and Ecuador's Gonzalo Escobar also guaranteed their presence in the penultimate round after eliminating second-seeded Germans Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies (7-6[3], 7-6[11]).
