Feliciano Lopez extends his last dance at Mallorca Championships

The German upsets defending champion Tsitsipas and Eubanks eliminates third seed Shelton

Feliciano Lopez reached the quarter-finals of the Mallorca Championships on Wednesday and is still hoping to finish his career with a title. The Spaniard beat Australian Jordan Thompson (7-6[6], 1-6, 6-3) and will face the other main protagonist of the day, Yannick Hanfmann, this Thursday, not before 16:00.

The German upset top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas (6-4, 3-6, 6-2) and prevented the Greek, ATP No.5, from defending his title at the Mallorca Country Club. Another surprise of the day was the victory of American Christopher Eubanks against his compatriot, third seed Ben Shelton (6-7 [4], 6-4, 7-6 [2]) and he will now meet Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech (6-3, 6-2 against Frenchman Constant Lestienne).

After closing the match in two hours and six minutes, Feliciano Lopez was very excited on the court. "It's difficult to explain what I felt. I value this victory very much to get a win like this at this stage of my career. Jordan Thompson is doing very well on grass and it's a gift to feel competitive playing one-on-one against all the players in the draw. It's a reason to feel proud because, on top of that, I've had the opportunity to win two matches," he confessed.

Faced with the options of continuing to advance in the last tournament he plays after two decades of professional career, the player from Toledo is not giving up on anything, but he is cautious before facing the German Yannick Hanfmann.

"I wasn't thinking about winning the title, but it's true that I'm getting closer and closer. The way I'm playing, I feel I'm capable of beating anyone in this draw if my body holds up. Hanfmann is dangerous, he's been playing well lately, he's Top-50 and he'll arrive with the confidence of having beaten Stefanos Tsitsipas.Let's see how I feel this Thursday. I hope to recover well and be able to fight the match.I think I can have chances.I don't know how or how many, but I feel ready if my body respects me.If I win, we'll think about the semi-final and beyond", he finished.
